Neil Talbott’s Work-in-Progress for “Dias de los Muertos”

Neil Talbott’s pen and ink illustrations are precise, crisp and clean as seen in his work-in-progress for Cottonwood Center for the Arts upcoming “Dia de los Muertos” Show.

Beginning his work lightly in pencil established the layout and basic shapes and let him erase and refine his composition before he started inking. Working on top of the penciled lines, Neil added or eliminated details as the illustration progressed. In this work, he has kept the gothic graphic flavor of his design by keeping his lines bold but fluid and avoiding details such as traditional techniques like stippling or cross-hatching.

Spare watercolor washes are added later with the occasional splash of color highlighting an interesting area or two.

The all-media juried show, “Dias de los Muertos”, opening on October 28th, explores native Mexican culture for Day of the Dead.
